Lawrence graduated from Nottingham University in 1985 and is a Chartered Civil Engineer. He worked for consultants Thorburn Colquhoun (now URS) for 14 years on the planning, design and construction of a range of highway schemes, including the A14 M1-A1 link road, before joining the Scottish Executive (now Transport Scotland) in 1999. 

With his current employer Lawrence was project manager in the Construction Division on a range of major road projects and spent 3 years as an Area Manager in the Network Management Division where, amongst his other duties, he managed studies relating to climate change and landslides. 

He is currently Project Manager for the Forth Replacement Crossing, a position which he has held since the inception of the project in 2006. The Forth Replacement Crossing, valued at between £1.7 and £2.3 billion, is described as the “biggest project in a generation”.
